Ertalyte Machining

Ertalyte is a highly stable thermoplastic polyester. It is valuable across a variety of different industries thanks to its range of advantageous properties, such as its high strength, wear resistance, and low coefficient of friction. In particular, Ertalyte is an optimal material for machining precision parts that will be used in high-wear applications. Many of Ertalyte’s properties make it the preferable choice when compared to materials such as nylon and acetal, as it often outperforms both of these in harsh, high-temperature environments.

ErtalyteProperties of Ertalyte

Ertalyte is a polyester with a semi-crystalline, unreinforced structure. It is based on the synthetic resin polyethylene terephthalate, and is available in two colors: natural and black. The excellent dimensional stability of Ertalyte stems from its strength, acid resistance, and low coefficient of friction. Its acid resistance is greater than that of acetal or nylon, making Ertalyte a popular choice for parts that will encounter very harsh, high-pressure environments.

Additionally, Ertalyte has a continuous service temperature of or 100°C. It remains stronger than acetal and nylon at high temperatures, and it has a significantly higher melting point than acetal. Its low moisture absorption makes it an ideal option in either wet or dry environments, further improving the versatility of this material.

Other beneficial Ertalyte properties include:

  • Resistance to chemicals, stains, and abrasions
  • Rigidity
  • Strong performance in high-velocity environments
  • Machinability

The Applications of Ertalyte

Its stability and resistance to wear make Ertalyte a popular choice in applications across a wide range of industries. As this material is capable of meeting the regulatory requirements of the FDA and USDA, it is ideal for use within the food processing industry. Manufacturers will often choose Ertalyte when machining components for food processing equipment. For instance, Ertalyte often comprises components within dough dividers or cutting machines.

However, the use of Ertalyte is not limited to the food processing industry. Manufacturers across many different industries utilize this versatile material. Its ability to perform well in harsh environments makes Ertalyte an optimal choice for components within mechanical engineering applications, such as joint levers for brakes or military applications. Additionally, Ertalyte is commonly found in the following applications:

  • Carousels
  • Fuel system connectors and rotors
  • Fuel pump components
  • Process and test equipment manifolds
  • Filter tracks

Parts Machined from Ertalyte

Ertalyte is a highly versatile material, and its stability makes it an optimal choice when machining parts with very tight tolerances. Due to its high strength, Ertalyte performs well in applications where it will be subjected to high loads and significant amounts of wear and tear. Parts for which manufacturers will often utilize Ertalyte include:

  • Fuel system parts
  • Wear and slide pads
  • Rollers and wheels
  • Journal bearings
  • Linear bearings
  • Valve seals
  • Scraper blades
  • Thrust washers
